the new Facebook: Accessible?

Hi there

I've just tried to sign up for a FaceBook account, and managed to verify my email address fine. However, every time I go to log in now, as soon as I hit go after entering the log in details, Jaws crashes when the next page loads. It just stops speaking. Restarting doesn't do any good, and the only way to get speech back is to close the website. Now i've heard that the new FaceBook isn't accessible at all. Is this why Jaws is doing this? Or perhaps, it's because i'm running Jaws 7. Do I need to update?

Any help would be appreciated

FM

PS: Jaws version number: 7.00.135

I checked out the site using JAWS 7 and it worked fine. Facebook is still prettty accessible. some of the new features haven't been made accessible yet but overall you can still do the stuff you could do with the old Facebook. The Layout of things has changed a bit and there are some new things but besides that it's alright.

What browser are you using? if using IE then try to turn off Clear Type.
Internet Options - Advanced - Uncheck the box for "Always Use Clear type for HTML" that might fix it..if not..then not sure....

Hi there

I don't have that option under advanced options. I'm using IE 6, if that helps. Never updated to 7.

Oh I see..Updating to IE 7 should fix the problem then...

*sighs* I was afraid of that. I really really really don't want to update, if it can be avoided, but I guess, if I want FaceBook, I have to, unless anyone else has come across a similar issue and has fixed it differently.

Thank you, Raj.

there really is no problem with IE 7, I came across the fact that if I wanted to use the chat on FB I had to update so I did and don't have a problem, but then again I'm using jaws 8, so uh, yeah

Post 7 by GoodRaju (Generic Zoner) on Tuesday, 30-Sep-2008 16:55:54

Last I heard about Facebook and IE 6 was that they had disabled Facebook support for IE 6. They Mentioned that they might add support for IE 6 later on, but I doubt it. You can wait for a few weeks to see if they Change it or not..but best thing to do is Move on to IE 7. Lots of other companies are phasing out IE 6 slowly from their supported list.

Any Reason why you don't want to Switch to IE 7? IE 8 should be coming out soon as well..so just a heads up for those of you who are interested in that.

I have jaws 9, and facebook works ok with it. I just hate the new facebook all together, so I really dont use it that much anymore. I am hoping they will bring the old one bak.

Why not just use firefox? I like the new layout, I just want them to fix the newsffed so that I can navigate by headings, but other then that, i like it.

Post 10 by CrazedMidget (Sweet fantacy's really do come in small packages!) on Tuesday, 30-Sep-2008 17:59:41

I'm not a huge user of FB, but I've never had any real problem with it, old version or new.

Post 13 by moonspun (This site is so "educational") on Wednesday, 01-Oct-2008 4:07:02

I fiddled a little and now, the pages will load. Jaws just spazzes for about 20 seconds with each new page, then works fine. I've had this problem elsewhere, and i suspect that it's just because of the Jaws version i'm running.

The main reason I didn't want to update was that i'd heard IE7 was very buggy and full of problems. If this isn't the case, then I suppose I should update. I've just downloaded a Jaws 9 demo to see if there's any difference, so i'll let you all know.

Thanks again for all the help.

I'm running IE 6 with jaws 9. It's a little sluggish but it works fine.
and yes, I hate hate the new facebook.
Maybe try turning automatic page refreshing off? a friend said that helps.
hit insert v and it's under there somewhere.

Post 15 by moonspun (This site is so "educational") on Wednesday, 01-Oct-2008 10:51:23

Thanks for this. I've run the demo of Jaws 9 and, as you say, it's sluggish, but it works with IE 6, just about. Thanks also for the tip on automatic page refreshing. I also know there's some way of making Jaws ignore Flash content. I presume this would remove the sluggishness, but would it dramatically alter what you can do on Facebook?

Cheers

Hi all,
I have no problem with the new Face Book. Of course, I have some vision and I use ZoomText.

Post 17 by Queen Rogue (Generic Zoner) on Thursday, 02-Oct-2008 4:00:38

Well...I have no problem with Facebook whatsoever, and I'm...using Jaws 8 with IE7. And still looking to add some friends.

I'm running IE 7, and jaws 9, I find it extremely sluggish. I hate it! am hoping jaws 10 may be an answer!

Post 19 by shadow of john (Veteran Zoner) on Thursday, 02-Oct-2008 8:53:50

people, people, people! Except for a few of you, you don't say why you hate the layout! most of you are like, "oh, it sucks!" or "damn, I hate it!" but why! Anyway, if you wanna add me, my name is John Abreu

Post 20 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Friday, 03-Oct-2008 9:12:41

I am running IE 7 with JAWS 8. I never go on facebook anymore. too much crap on that site. Anyway, I have not had any issues with IE 7.

Post 21 by the icon (Zone BBS Addict) on Friday, 03-Oct-2008 10:00:33

yeah, you say you hate the new layout, have you ever just kept looking at it to figure it out? that's what i did, its ok now, just be patient with it. website teams won't always do things that are perfect for us, just live with it! sorry if i sounded angry, didn't mean to

Post 22 by Ukulele<3 (Try me... You know you want to.) on Friday, 03-Oct-2008 10:21:01

mmm I really don't mind the new facebook now. I sat down one day and figured it all out. Yay! heehee It's really not that bad. At least I get the layout and I can write on people's walls and view their profiles. Give it a try. It's really not that bad.

Post 23 by jeffreyshockley (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Friday, 03-Oct-2008 18:26:37

I took a look at tthe new Facebook, and I'm using IE 7 and JAWS 9 and 10 Beta and it works fine. It's not that bad, things just have changed a little as all.

Post 24 by SingerOfSongs (Heresy and apostasy is how progress is made.) on Saturday, 04-Oct-2008 2:49:22

After using it a good bit this week, I have to say I don't mind it at all. Hell, even the instant messaging system on there is usably accessible.

Post 25 by moonspun (This site is so "educational") on Sunday, 05-Oct-2008 8:19:24

Ok, I updated to Jaws 9, still with IE6, and everything's running absolutely fine. It has the odd bit of sluggishness, but nothing to write home about.

Thanks to you all for all your help.

Post 27 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Wednesday, 08-Oct-2008 17:36:05

Wow, forget the spacebar key? I don't really hav a probelm with it, I just wish that they would put back the headings in the newsfeed, but other then that, works perfectly fine for me.

Post 28 by rdfreak (THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE-BLUE KANGA-KICKIN AUSIE) on Thursday, 09-Oct-2008 7:39:21

I totally agree about the headings in the news feed.
and as for the previous problem I spoke of, I am not sure what I'm doing wrong as oppose to all you guys who aren't having the trouble I am with IE7 and Jaws 9. It's barely useable for me due to the extreme sluggishness. :(

Post 29 by skittles_freak (the freak of skittles) on Thursday, 09-Oct-2008 19:06:37

the new facebook is ok, but when choosing certain things on superpoke, I can't choose the different types of cake, sheep or whatever.

The new facebook is okay. Though, I'm still not sure how to use the instant messeging system on there

Post 32 by skittles_freak (the freak of skittles) on Wednesday, 15-Oct-2008 11:32:21

I don't use the instant messaging feature! If it's important, they have other ways to find me, don't they?

Post 33 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Wednesday, 15-Oct-2008 21:54:15

I kind of got used to it, but given the choice, I would choose the old profile.
i think it's facebook that is sluggesh and not the screen reader.

Post 34 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Thursday, 16-Oct-2008 17:26:30

agreed. wasn't there a option that allowed you to go back to the old facebook?

Post 35 by faithful angel (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Thursday, 16-Oct-2008 23:48:24

Yes facebook is accessible. I use it every day. Yes, it is different than the old version, but it is workable. Basically, the layout is pretty much the only thing that has changed. Also, the wall is different. I haven't really messed around with the applications, so... I'm not sure about those, but still.

Post 36 by Ukulele<3 (Try me... You know you want to.) on Friday, 17-Oct-2008 7:46:33

I find that the applications are still navigable. The wall is really easy as well. It's just that it shows evrything from statuses to notifications on the wall so you see everything. In the edit applications, there is a way to check it so it doesn't do this but you have to go in each application setting to do this. I haven't figured out the im feature either but agree with Karrie in saying how they can contact me in other ways. If anyone has any questions on how to work the new fb, feel free to ask and I'll try to help. Oh yeah. You can't go back to the old fb now. There used to be that option but not anymore.

ah, so they did change it. The new fb is great! I read somewhere that there are people who are boycotting the new fb. Is that true?

Post 38 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Monday, 20-Oct-2008 22:13:36

I've seen a bunch of groups about it, but i don't know.

Post 39 by skittles_freak (the freak of skittles) on Wednesday, 22-Oct-2008 0:43:05

yup, yankee (aka) garret did a few boycott's. He actually had his account disabled so he wasn't tempted to log in... For some reason, Jaws won't read me anything in my edet aplications, so yeah... I have like to many of them.
